Sir John Barrow(Hoad) Monument

The Sir John Barrow (or more colloquially, Hoad) Monument, which sits on top of Hoad Hill in Ulverston, was built in 1850 to commemorate Sir John Barrow. He was born in Ulverston and was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society. Despite appearances, it is not a lighthouse; it has never had a functional light installed. The monument is maintained by a group of lighthouse keepers, however!

The monument itself is rather striking, towering above the town. If you travel to Ulverston along the A590 main road, the tower is rather imposing as it is actually quite close to the road and is the first thing you see when you approach the town. A visit to Ulverston is incomplete without a walk up Hoad Hill to the monument, where you will be rewarded with fantastic views across the town to the south.

A photograph taken from the Ford Park Plant Nursery, located at the base of the monument. The nursery contains a large amount of plant life, which was a hive of activity with bees. You can see these photos in the Flora and Fauna section of the website.
